### Introduction

## Definition

"Equations" are equations, formulas or any mathematical expressions displayed using mathematical notations such as:

- AsciiMath
- MathML
- TeX
- Unicode characters

## Equations in the Formulas question type

In Formulas questions, variables can be inserted into equations in the same way as into the text, that is, by enclosing the name of variables with { }. Expressions such as {=x/1000} can also be inserted into equations.

## Editors

Equations are more easily created using an equation or formula editor. There are many commercial and open source editors, with varying degrees of ease of use. These can generate the LaTeX and/or MathML codes for an equation, which can then be simply added to the HTML code of most text fields in Moodle.
